The Japan’s first micro-brewery
～全国第一号クラフトビール（地ビール）～

日本においてクラフトビール（当時の呼び方は「地ビール」）が誕生したのは、1994年の酒税法の改正でビール製造免許を取るのに必要な最低製造量が大きく引き下げられたことで、中小の造り手によるビール製造が可能になったことがきっかけです。このとき全国で一歩先んじてブルーパブを開き、日本で初めての国内製造クラフトビールとなったのがエチゴビールです。つまりエチゴビールの創業は、日本のクラフトビールの誕生でもあります。

A number of micro-breweries in Japan opened after the revision of the liquor tax law in 1994, because the minimum production volume required to take a beer brewing license was greatly reduced. It made it possible for small manufacturers to start business. At that time, Echigo Beer opened a brewpub first in Japan. Being the first brewery of Japanese craft beer, we have been one of main players in the industry since then.

ロマンを語ろう！舞台に立とう！

1970年代後半から80年代にかけて、エチゴビールの創業者は日本を離れ欧州で演劇家をしていました。イタリアのローマを拠点に舞踊などを学び、演劇や映画に出演する日々を送る中で、絵本作家のドイツ人女性と出逢いました。バカンスシーズンは彼女の故郷レーゲンンスブルグへ遊びに行き、そこでドイツの豊かなビール文化を体験したのです。そして後に、これを故郷の新潟から日本に広めたいと考えたのが、エチゴビールの起点です。
エチゴビールのトレードマークであるビールを片手に微笑む雄ヤギのイラストはその絵本作家の女性によるものです。雄ヤギはドイツやチェコでは多産・豊作・商売繁盛のシンボルです。

私たちエチゴビールは、この創業の物語と志を忘れず、日本さらに世界のビールという大きな舞台で、生き生きと演じる役者でありたいと願っています。ここで働いている一人ひとりも、それぞれの人生という舞台で、夢を語り、ドラマの主役を演じています。そして、飲み手であるお客様のドラマを、精一杯応援したいと思っています。

The founder of Echigo Beer had been working as a stage actor in Europe from the late 1970s to the 1980s apart from his parents who run a sake brewery in Niigata. While studying clowning act and dance, and appearing in theaters and movies based in Rome Italy, he met a German woman, a picture book artist. He went to her hometown Regensburg in vacation seasons and experienced the deep and diverse German beer culture there. And later, he wanted to spread it to Japan from his home Niigata. This is the starting point of Echigo Beer.
The illustration of a male goat smiling with a beer which is a trademark of Echigo Beer was drawn by her, the German picture book artist. A male goat is a symbol of vitality, harvest and business prosperity in Germany and the Czech Republic.

Now, we are surely keeping his story and dream, and try to be an actor who plays vividly on the stage of Japanese beer and even world’s beer. Each and every one who works here talks about their dreams on the stage of their own lives and plays the leading role in the drama. And certainly we hope to support your drama to the utmost.
